A good Question

I found this question on Werner's site of socialism. Since he oly prints comments which reflect his own point. I decided to answer the question on mine.

Although I'm a lefty, I do have a bit of a libertarian streak.
Why are their artifical controls on the number of taxi s in the city (any city for that matter, we have the same here in Ottawa)? I mean, what is the rationale for rationing the number of licences?
If the only requirement for a licence was a safe care, a good driving record and the payment of a $500 fee, there would be a lot more taxis and better services and prices.
Honestly, I've never understood this. If there is a good rationale for doing this, then I'd be ok, but I've never heard it.

Of course there is a rational. If you restrict the number of people in a given profession then you can keep wages artificially high. Welcome to Unions and all other forms of job regulation. Why would you need a license to give manicures? For Safety? No, because white people want to get paid a certain amount to give them, and Chinese immigrants are willing to do them for a third of the price and this would eat into the white beautician’s clientele. Taxi licensing, as are most other forms of job licensing based on racist policies meant to prevent competition. Welcome to leftism. Welcome to Socialism. Welcome to the ideology that promotes itself based on its compassion for people. The only people that succeed with leftism are the people closest to the bureaucracy—unions, civil servants and people with government ties.

I see Craig Smith (ferrethouse) is up to his usual lies. I never wrote that piece that he quotes, but I am sick and tired of explaining the background to that story over and over again, so that even a nimrod like Craig Smith can understand it.

Just for the record, the article here contains yet another lie, because I publish all comments on my blog (including angryroughneck's recent comment on this subject); the only ones that don't make it are those filled with personal insults and foul language.

Oh, and Craig Smith, I hope you are feeling really good about yourself for being a pathological liar.

HERE is a good analysis, like this:

The main reason these restrictions exist is that taxi drivers are organised to lobby for them but passengers are not organised to lobby against.

If there is a market for tradable licenses, then an increase in supply of licenses will devalue the price of cabbies who have paid thousands of dollars to buy a license from someone.

Calgary's a very spread out city and cabbies might not be paid by the kilometer.

I can understand regulating quality to operate a taxi cab, but not regulating the number of cabs.

I agree OttawaCon. I seem to remember a number of my posts being deleted from CO. There was nothing rude, abusive or profane about them, just good logical arguement. But I guess that's profane in Werner's eyes. I seem to remember having a .jpg around somewhere - a screen capture where the CO banner reads something like Blogging Tories aren't allowed to post there. I took the capture right after he had deleted my posts. It was changed back by the next day, but you gotta love screen captures. I'll dig around and see if I can find it.

threats of legal action? Werener, come on it may be you that emberasses himself. I for one have been censored several times on your web site and what reason would all these people have to lie. People are randomly and unjustly attacking you. Oh well the jury has decided
